Rabbi Aníbal Mass Bio
Aníbal Mass, born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, was an active Chazzan for more than 25 years before receiving his Rabbinic Ordination from the Jewish Spiritual Learning Institute of New York in 2017. Rabbi Mass has been with Congregation Shaarey Zedek in Winnipeg, Canada since August 2002, first as Chazzan, and then as Rabbi.
Rabbi Mass studied at the Seminario Rabinico Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires, first as a student at the pre-rabbinical school and then at the Escuela de Jazanim “Bet Asaf” (School of Chazzanim). Following the completion of his studies at the Seminario, Rabbi Mass was selected as full-time Chazzan by the Circulo Israelita of Santiago, Chile, where he served for over eight years.
Rabbi Mass is active in teaching opportunities at Congregation Shaarey Zedek and has developed novel methods of engaging new and existing community members. He oversees Dor Chadash Youth Choir with current and exciting melodies for them to learn and share throughout the wider community in the city. He also teaches traditional and modern Jewish Liturgy at the Gray Academy throughout the school year. In addition to his work with youth, Rabbi Mass also enjoys providing adult education and has been the organizer and educator for the Choosing Judaism program at SZ for the last seven years. Rabbi Mass provides weekly Torah Study and he enjoys participating in Interfaith and Multifaith discussion groups where he welcomes opportunities for dialogue. In addition to his teaching activities, Rabbi Mass completed a Degree in Computer Science from ORT Argentina and continues to use his computer/technology expertise to help develop and implement new strategies for connecting with a larger audience through live streaming of services and online educational classes.
Rabbi Mass is the proud father of Marcelo and Nurit who are both pursuing post-secondary education in South America.
Rabbi Mass is married to Winnipeg-born Dr. Ashira Meyers Mass and they are the proud parents of their son, Ronen Yehuda, named in memory or their fathers.
